Q: What led you to a career in banking?
A: Initially, I didn’t want to be in banking. Growing up in Jamaica, I often saw news about bank employees getting in trouble, which deterred me from considering a career in banking. However, a schoolmate suggested banking might be a good fit for me. I went through some interviews and was hired at a large bank in Jamaica as a teller. I quickly realized I enjoyed banking—the customer interactions, the people I worked with. Over time, I saw the positive impact I could have on others, like encouraging a coworker to save regularly, which she still thanks me for today.

Q: What was the most useful piece of advice you received in the early/formative years of your career?
A: One of my managers gave me invaluable advice: "A pencil is made with an eraser for a reason. Never be afraid to make a mistake. Own up to it and use that eraser." This taught me to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and to approach challenges with resilience.

Q: Tell us about one experience you’ve had that exemplifies being a banker or your role at the bank, such as a service story that really helped a customer or a quirky story.
A: I was working as an analyst and assisting a branch manager with a line of credit renewal. I walked her through the financial statements and questions to ask the customer, which she had never experienced before. The customer appreciated the interest and thoroughness in understanding his business. This experience highlighted the importance of communication and truly engaging with customers to provide better service and build trust.

Q: What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
A: It might not surprise my coworkers, but I love to sing, despite not being very good at it. They even joke about paying me not to sing. I also love to go walking / jogging, to dance and to laugh which brings joy to my everyday life.

Q: First tap/click of the day?
A: The Bible app. I start my day with devotion, which gives me peace and a guidance for the day. It reminds me to stay grounded and focused.

Q: Book that you love/has made an impact?
A: My pastor’s book, 10 Qualities that Move you from a Believer to a Disciple. It emphasizes the importance of reflecting Christ to the people around us and intentionally serving others.

Q: TV show or series you love?
A: I enjoy watching American Ninja Warrior, The Amazing Race, and Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies.

Additional Insights:
As a banker, I once spoke to a coworker who referred to herself as “just a teller.” I emphasized that no one is “just” anything. We all play crucial roles, impacting our customers and colleagues. For example, I usually tip the restroom attendants at airports, acknowledging their often overlooked work. This small act brings light to their eyes and shows them they are seen and valued. Similarly, by reaching out to customers and showing genuine interest, we build trust and relationships that set us apart from larger banks. It's the little things that make a difference, making people feel valued.
