Q: What led you to a career in banking?
A: I graduated with a finance degree from Georgia Southern University, and while I never imagined that I’d spend my career looking at tax returns, here I am, 25 years into banking. Before banking, I did a few things around Augusta, but everything changed when I met my wife and we moved to the Cumming area. I needed a job, so I joined SunTrust in their construction department, and that’s what led me into banking.

Q: What was the most useful piece of advice you received from a mentor?
A: Early in my career, I remember constantly going to my first boss with questions. Finally, he told me, “You don’t need to ask so many questions. You’re going to make a mistake, and that’s okay, just don’t make the same one twice.” That advice has stuck with me ever since.

Q: Can you share an experience that exemplifies being a banker?
A: One story comes to mind. I have a customer whose husband passed away not long after I helped them with a construction loan. He had MS, but they didn’t know he had cancer, and he passed away within 60 days of his diagnosis. She recently emailed me with the subject line, “Can you chat? I need a consult from my faux financial adviser.” She didn’t want to retell her whole story, and I understood that. I joked back, “I love the new title, but just so you know, I’m not in a position to give financial advice, only opinions.” It’s a reminder that being a banker is about relationships. For some customers, we’re not just bankers; we’re people they rely on.

Q: What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
A: During college, I worked for two years changing tires and oil. I even had my name on my shirt! Now, I’m teaching my kids how to change a tire. I think it’s important they at least know where everything is in the car, especially if it’s 2 a.m. and help is hours away.

Q: First tap/click of the day.
A: The Weather Channel. I check it every day.

Q: Podcast that you recommend?
A: Acquired. It’s a fantastic podcast with the tagline, “Every company has a story.” They dive into the stories of companies like Costco and Starbucks, and it’s full of insights. It’s business-related, so any useful knowledge I pick up is helpful for my customers.

Q: Favorite TV show or series?
A: The Andy Griffith Show. I love Mayberry.
