Q: What led you to a career in banking?
A: Before I started college, a family friend referred me to a community bank. I started working there while in school and was hooked! During my tenure there of eleven years, I encountered tremendous opportunities to learn and continue to enjoy the journey!
Q: What was the most useful piece of advice you received from a mentor (or in the early/formative years of your career)?
A: One of my mentors referred me to Trust Services for an account manager role in retirement plan administration. While the trust services area of banking was totally new to me then, I really enjoyed my customers and learning more about their businesses. Little did I know that it was a springboard to human resources and still today, I’m passionate about what I do.
Q: Tell us about one experience you’ve had that exemplifies being a banker or your role at the bank.
A: From a human resources perspective, my employees are my internal customers. Over the years, my role has migrated from predominately administrative tasks to being a member of the executive team with a focus on organizational development. My past experience in the retail and commercial side of the bank has given me a big-picture view when working with my employees on day-to-day challenges. I feel that a positive employee experience has a direct impact on our customers and includes a focus on flexibility, wellness and career development.
Q: First tap/click of the day?
A: Email. I allow a few minutes in the morning to check my messages to see if there is anything urgent that may change my schedule. Prioritize, prioritize!
Q: Book that you love/has made an impact?
A: I recently read “WHO,” which would have you refocus on your recruiting approach. Talent acquisition is really tough today, and it’s definitely about getting the right person in the right seat on the team!
Q: Pet peeve?
A: When a new employee in any retail, customer facing environment is not being mentored/trained. The unguided talent is wasted with no direction!
Q: TV show or series you love?
A: The Crown
Q: What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
A: I really enjoy offshore fishing. The ocean is certainly a calming influence but the marine life is amazing. There’s nothing like seeing dolphins swim beside the boat!
