Q: What was your first job, and was there a lesson you learned there that you still use today?
A: My first job was at ABC Plant Nursery in Albany. I did everything from weeding plants to helping customers to installs at people’s houses. It taught me how to talk with people and that I enjoyed working with people. I definitely enjoyed the personal interactions and selling more than the plant work. It also taught me that I don’t want to weed plants in the summer in South Georgia.
Q: What has surprised you most about working in the banking industry?
A: The one thing that I always find surprising, almost on a day-to-day basis, is how people make money. There are so many different careers and businesses that people have or are involved in. I find it fascinating to talk with various people about their businesses and what they do.
Q: How has attending Leadership Conference and being on the LGBA Executive Committee affected your career?
A: The Leadership Conference is awesome! It is in a beautiful place that is perfect for the event. The biggest thing that has helped me is the people I have met and the relationships that my family and I have formed. When I was asked to be on the Executive Committee, it was a no-brainer for me. I could be involved in the Leadership Conference and help make it better each year.
Q: If you weren’t working in banking, what would you be doing instead or what would your life be like?
A: I would most likely be a prized bull fighter! Just kidding. I honestly don’t know. I have been in banking since graduating college, which was a long time ago. I took a job in banking until I “figured out what I wanted to do.” Almost 17 years later, I am still in banking. Whatever I would be doing other than banking, it would involve people and helping them with some need or problem. I used to want to be a dentist, but didn’t want the school that went along with it.
Q: What is your favorite TV show?
A: I would say sports. I know that is very general, but I love watching all sports. I guess one of my favorite TV shows was Mad Men. My wife and I started watching it on Netflix after it had ended, and it was awesome! We basically binge-watched it every night once we got our child to bed.
